Oregon State is clearly Back in the Pac-10 Hunt, now I hope that things work in California running back Jahvid Best, who has taken the state court after landing hard on the back of the head at the end of a race touchdown.

The word is now Best suffered a concussion. He has movement in his extremities, which is good news.

Not much went right for the Bears, after Best was made for men, although, as Oregon State rolled to their fifth consecutive victory in Berkeley, 31-14.

Beavers quarterback Sean Canfield continued his hot play. Jet for 342 yards and touchdowns, and also because he ran for a score. The oldest already leading the conference in passing, and he may be soaring toward the first team All-Pac-10 honors.

is Rep. Joseph Cao (R-LA), that of the Republicans who voted yes to the House Democrats’ bill for health care?

Cao was first elected to Congress in 2008 by the solidly Democratic district in New Orleans and obtained a shocking victory over Democratic Rep. William Jefferson, who was accused (and was later convicted) on charges of corruption. Throughout his life, he was a child refugee from Vietnam, a former Jesuit seminarian and a lawyer.

Not much went right for the bears, after Best was hurt, although, as Oregon State rolled to their fifth consecutive victory in Berkeley, 31-14.

Beavers improved to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in Pac-10. With a visit to Washington and a road game at Washington State next weekend, have a good chance of playing in the Civil War in Oregon, with substantial involvement on the line.

Oregon State dominated statistically, outgaining the Bears 436 yards to 239.

Best TD obstacle that has hurt the Beavers cut the lead to 14-7 with 6:07 left in the second quarter, but after watching the Bears – understandably – out of sync.

NFL wins StarCaps case

The NFL earned a significant victory in the Minnesota federal court on Friday, a win that could hurt the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints in the upcoming season.

A federal judge dismissed the claims of five NFL players who had been suspended last season for use of a banned diuretic in the diet supplement StarCaps. Among the five are four starting defensive linemen for the Vikings and Saints, including Pro Bowl defensive tackles Pat Williams and Kevin Williams(notes) of Minnesota and starting defensive ends Charles Grant(notes) and Will Smith(notes) of New Orleans.

All four are expected to sit the first four games of next season without pay. Their suspensions had been blocked last season while U.S. district judge Paul Magnuson heard arguments from the league and the NFL Players Association.

“We are pleased that after a careful review of the record the court has upheld the suspensions of the players in this case,” NFL spokesman Greg Aiello wrote in an email Saturday morning. The decision strongly supports the NFL program on performance enhancing substances that protects the health and safety of NFL players and the integrity of our game.”

The league had suspended the four defensive linemen and then-Saints running back Deuce McAllister(notes) last season after they tested positive for the diuretic Bumetanide, which flushes water from the body and is considered a masking agent for steroids. McAllister is currently unsigned, but also faces a four-game suspension.

Attorney David Cornwell argued on the players’ behalf that the league failed to warn the players about the presence of Bumetanide in StarCaps even though the league had known for two years that StarCaps contained the banned substance.

The issue created a significant debate about the role of the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.

A message to NFLPA attorney Jeff Kessler, who argued the case in federal court, was not immediately returned.

The main issue regarding StarCaps is that the NFL was aware as far back as 2006 that the supplement contained Bumetanide. However, the league only followed minimal procedure in making players aware of the banned (and sometime dangerous) substance in the supplement.

While ruling in the NFL’s favor, Magnuson chastised the league for not being more forthcoming.

“There is no doubt that it would have been preferable for the NFL to communicate with players specifically about the presence of bumetanide in StarCaps,” Magnuson wrote in his judgment. “The NFL’s failure to do so is baffling, but it is not a breach of the NFL’s duties to its players.”

Bryant’s 3 sparks Lakers past Nuggets

DENVER (AP)—Kobe Bryant’s(notes) 3-pointer wasn’t nearly as dramatic as LeBron James’(notes) but equally effective.

Bryant’s big shot over J.R. Smith(notes) gave Los Angeles a one-point lead with just over a minute left Saturday night and sparked the Lakers to a 103-97 victory over the downtrodden Denver Nuggets for a 2-1 lead in the Western Conference finals.

Bryant, who scored 41 points, went 5-of-6 on free throws to ice it after his 3-pointer gave Los Angeles a 96-95 lead.

Carmelo Anthony(notes) scored 21 points but just three after halftime for Denver, which lost at home for the first time since March 9. He was 4-for-13 in his worst performance of the postseason.

Before Saturday night, the Nuggets had been dominant at home in the playoffs. They ran away with all six games at Pepsi Center against the New Orleans Hornets and Dallas Mavericks by an average of 17.5 points.

But as Bryant said, “It’s the Western Conference finals. It should be close.”

Series Breakdown

The Nuggets, who led most of the game but were done in by poor decisions and a failure to keep their composure, fell behind by four points when Trevor Ariza(notes) stole Kenyon Martin’s(notes) inbounds pass, was fouled by Anthony and sank two foul shots for a 99-95 lead with 36 seconds left.

Chauncey Billups’(notes) two free throws made it 99-97, but Bryant sank two more free throws with 22 seconds remaining, Billups missed a 3-pointer and Bryant capped his big night with two more foul shots with 12 seconds left.

Several hours before the game, Bryant was admiring James’ buzzer-beater that gave Cleveland a 96-95 win over Orlando in the Eastern Conference finals, saying big-time players make big-time shots.

He showed that.

The Nuggets had won 16 in a row at home, and now Los Angeles has grabbed back the home-court advantage.

Game 4 is Monday night, when the Lakers and Nuggets will have the Pepsi Center to themselves after World Wrestling Entertainment moved Monday Night Raw to the Staples Center in Los Angeles because of the double booking that WWE chairman Vince McMahon milked for all it was worth.

That doesn’t mean the crowd in Denver won’t see some elbows, forearms and more trash talking like they did Saturday night, when there were five technicals called, including one on Smith for taunting Sasha Vujacic(notes) after swishing a 3-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer.

The Nuggets took a 79-71 lead on Smith’s bucket. Vujacic, who had just hit a 3-pointer of his own, his first points of the game, nearly stole Billups’ pass, but Smith snared it, spun and swished the 3-pointer as the backboard lit up in red and he fell to the floor with the crowd going crazy.

Caught up in the moment, Smith jumped up jawing at Vujacic and was T’d up.

Denver coach George Karl told ABC at the break that he didn’t like the way the Nuggets had played the third quarter, saying they had lost composure with fouls and technicals and weren’t playing smart.

Before the fourth quarter started, Bryant swished the technical free throw, and the comeback had begun.

Los Angeles Lakers head coach …

AP - May 23, 11:12 pm EDT
Ariza’s 3-pointer gave the Lakers an 81-80 lead with 7 1/2 minutes remaining.

After Billups’ four-point play—a 3-pointer while getting bumped by Bryant — gave Denver a 89-86 lead, Pau Gasol(notes) hit back-to-back jumpers over Nene to put the Lakers back on top, and Bryant’s bucket made it 92-91 with three minutes left.

The Lakers were just 9-of-17 on free throws in the first half and Denver hit 17 of 20, but the Nuggets couldn’t break free for one of their patented spurts, twice missing three shots on one trip downcourt when a bucket would have given them some cushion.

Notes

Lakers C Andrew Bynum(notes) has been saying he wants to play more minutes and his coach said he can if he plays better defense. … Bryant grabbed his right hamstring after Martin rejected his shot early in the third quarter, but he stayed in the game and quickly showed he was quite all right by hitting an uncontested 3-pointer.

Rodriguez calls SI writer to apologize

TAMPA, Fla. – Alex Rodriguez has called Sports Illustrated's Selena Roberts to apologize for critical comments he made during an ESPN interview.

Roberts was co-author of the Feb. 7 article on SI's Web site that reported he was on a list of 104 players who tested positive for steroids during baseball's anonymous 2003 survey. Rodriguez told ESPN two days later that he had used banned substances from 2001-3 while playing for Texas.

"I know this lady from Sports Illustrated, Selena Roberts, is trying to throw things out there that in high school I tried steroids. I mean, that's the biggest bunch of baloney I've ever heard in my life," he told ESPN, adding that "this lady is coming out with all these allegations, all these lies."

Roberts said Sunday that Rodriguez called her last Wednesday. She didn't want to comment on the call until Rodriguez holds a news conference after arriving at spring training Tuesday.

She is writing a book "A-Rod: The Many Lives of Alex Rodriguez," due for publication by HarperCollins on April 14.
